For a long while there, I only really subscribed to two sports podcasts in Overcast:
- The BS Report with Bill Simmons
- The Lowe Post with Zach Lowe
One sports podcast and one NBA-specific podcast that I really got into during the playoffs. Bill Simmons was so, so good at covering everything I cared about listening to across the entire sports spectrum that I didn't bother looking for more granular shows that specifically covered the NFL, college football, college basketball, the NBA, whatever else. I didn't feel the need to, because I thought that Simmons was nailing everything to the extent I needed it covered.
After he left ESPN, I subscribed to a dozen or so sports shows, most of which I've already left behind. Some have been kept on, but they're mainly related to college football, which is currently in season and very exciting for me following a somewhat surprising 4-0 start for the Gators. Simmons covers college football pretty rarely, so I'll likely keep those in rotation anyway. I am very excited, however, to hear that Simmons is returning with a new podcast that I'm sure will pick up right where he left off.
The Bill Simmons Podcast (complete with a shiny new HBO logo in the upper-right-hand corner) is available now in iTunes and wherever else you get your podcasts. This is great for two reasons:
- This podcast is not behind some sort of HBO paywall; it's in iTunes, where it should be, because Simmons' content is best when it's available to everyone for free.
- We get a Bill Simmons podcast again! Truly blessed.
This launches on October 1st, aka this week, so it's great timing because we only had to endure three weeks of the NFL without Cousin Sal yelling about something. Here's a teaser of his new show via SoundCloud. Can't wait to see the next stage of Simmons' career continue to unfold.
